Ranking The Assassin's Creed Franchise


After eight year and twenty iterations, the Assassin's Creed franchise has become a staple in the console industry. The main line series has become the bread and butter for Ubisoft as a new iteration is released yearly. With Assassin's Creed Syndicate right around the corner, here is a ranking of every main line entry of the Assassin's Creed franchise.

?. Assassin's Creed Rogue


Unfortunately I never got around to playing Assassin's Creed Rogue. By the time it released I had already fully committed to the new generation of consoles. From what I've heard, it was actually much better than the new gen Assassin's Creed Unity. Maybe Ubisoft will run out of AAA games one year and port this forward.

7. Assassin's Creed


Ah Assassin's Creed. The first to kick off what would become a huge franchise. The story revolved around fan favorite Alta├»r yet the gameplay is what places this at such a low rank. I couldn't help but notice I was doing the same few things over and over: travel to city, tail a few people, assassination, repeat. After my third rotation of that seemingly endless cycle, I simply stopped playing all together.

6. Assassin's Creed Unity


Unity had the misfortune of being my seventh Assassin's Creed game in eight years. At this point the series had become stale and yet my expectations had gotten higher with the release of new consoles. Unity enticed with its large open world and visuals that took advantage of the Xbox One and PS4. Yet the game was riddled with bugs, glitches, a lackluster story, and a combat/stealth system that paled in comparison to previous entries.

5. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag


Black Flag was made with one idea in mind: take the sailing that everyone loved from three, and make it the focus for four. Assassin's Creed III handled the sailing aspect in a great way. It was a nicely added, optional, activity that you could partake in. The key word being optional. Black Flag took it to the far extreme. Not only did you sail during missions, side missions, and miscellaneous activities, but you also sailed to and from each of those! It became a little too much. The pirate/assassin Edward Kenway that acted more like the former rather than the franchise latter didn't help much either.

4. Assassin's Creed Revelations


Revelations and Brotherhood were really the two games in the series that started the annual franchise tradition. While Brotherhood was an expansions of Assassin's Creed 2, Revelations was an expansion of Brotherhood. The multiplayer mode was fleshed out to include more maps and game modes and the Hookblade made its first appearance. The Hookblade made climbing in Revelations the smoothest the series had ever seen. Den Defense was also another big addition. A "tower defense" style mini-game in which you ordered your trained assassins to protect one of your many dens. I really enjoyed this mode as it brought something very unique to the series.

3. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood


Brotherhood capitalized on one of the very best in the series, Assassin's Creed 2. Instead of the Villa, Brotherhood allowed players to become a true Rockefeller and purchase all of the shops in the area to make money. It was a very rewarding system that kept a constant flow of coin coming in. Brotherhood also was the first in the series to introduce multiplayer. Although criticized by many, the multiplayer in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood was truly unique. A feat that very few games can claim. The Brotherhood aspect focused on saving citizens to recruit and eventually dispatch on missions for profit and resources. Brotherhood had a lot going for it even though it took many of its aspects from....

2. Assassin's Creed II


It was hard not ranking this at number one being such an amazing game. Assassin's Creed II expanded and improved on nearly every aspect of its predecessor. Missions were broken up in such a way that the gameplay flow didn't feel as repetitive. This was also the introduction of the Dual Hidden Blades, a now staple of the franchise. One of the coolest aspects though was the Villa. What starts as simply your headquarters turns into an incredible fortress after you upgrade it. Purchasing various items also increased your revenue from the villa, which in turn made you tons of money. AC2 even expanded on the mission types and stealth blending actions from Assassin's Creed. The first might have started the franchise, but every game after followed in the footsteps of Assassin's Creed II.

1. Assassin's Creed III


I know I'll get some flak for this, but Assassin's Creed III incorporated too much awesome for me to not rank it at number one. First of all, yes, this game had its fair share of glitches. Even though I knocked on Unity for the same reason, somehow I was able to look past the glitches in AC3 and enjoy what the game had to offer. The Frontier is the key to this high ranking. Hunting for game small and large, completing side missions for people that would later join your community, performing assassinations from atop tree branches, sneaking through three feet of snow, and of course the sailing combined to make this an amazing game. Not to mention Connor had one of the best assassin outfits to date, as long as he had his hood up that is.

Future: Syndicate and Beyond


Assassin's Creed Syndicate continues the franchise with dual protagonists Jacob and Evie Frye. The new setting and the addition of a second, female, character hopefully will add a much needed flair to the series after the disappointment of last year. The future of Assassin's Creed is hard to predict. With nearly an endless supply of historical moments in time, Ubisoft could go in any direction they please. I'm still holding out for a main line entry to be set in feudal Japan (Chronicles doesn't count!).

  1. Flak indeed, AC3 was super disappointing. I liked the added features but I enjoy AC for the narrative and characters and AC3 had little of either
