Mental Health and Psychosis Key Themes in Ninja Theory's Hellblade

Ninja Theory has announced that their upcoming game Hellbalde will focus on elements of mental health and psychosis through the eyes of Senua. A Celtic warrior left traumatized by a Viking invasions, Senua journeys into her vision of hell brought on by her mental illness.

The team at Ninja Theory has been working close with a psychiatrist and other professionals to get the most accurate portrayal of mental illness as they can.
Paul Fletcher said: “True understanding of mental health is not simply about books, lectures or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels. Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character's experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma.”
Hellblade is being developed as what Ninja Theory call an "Independent AAA". Headed up by a team of only 15 people, the game is being created with the freedom of indies and the production value of AAA blockbusters. If you recall, Ninja Theory is also the team behind well received DmC: Devil May Cry, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and Heavenly Sword.

Hellblade will be available in 2016 and will be shown off at this years E3.
