Activation Key Required For Elder Scrolls Online

UPDATE: We've been contacted by Bethesda's PR company with the following statement:

The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code; as with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification.  Any previous statements counter to this were incorrect.

Original Story:

Bethesda has confirmed today that the upcoming console release of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited will require you to have a unique activation key to get past the log in screen. This will mean that anyone hoping to rent the game or buy the game used post-launch will be out of luck.

Here's what ZOS_GaryA from the Elder Scrolls Online forum had to say:
"To clarify, you will need a unique game registration code in order to play the game, and used copies will not be eligible to receive a key if the code has already been redeemed."
This makes it sound like it would be unlikely to be able pick up an Activation Key from your favourite store front for a discounted price, like the Online Passes that were rampant on last gen.

He goes onto say:
"It works the same way as the PC version in that the code included in the box is to activate your ESOTU account and the discs are for installation purposes. If you own the disc but don't have a key, you'll be able to install the game and reach the login screen, but you won't be able to log in and access the game without an active ESOTU account."
So there you have it. You want to play ESO? You have to buy it. Sound off in the comments below with your opinion!
